Suppose a golfer hits a ball 200 m on level ground, giving it an initial velocity at an angle of 45.0o. The duration of the impact of the club and ball has been measured to be 1.00 ms.

            a)         Calculate the velocity of the ball just after it is struck.

            b)         What is the 0.0450 kg ball’s change in momentum?  

c)         Find the average force exerted by the club on the ball.  

Explanation / Answer

let Vo is the is the velocity of the ball just after it is struck

a) we know, horizontal range, R = vo^2*sin(2*theta)/g

200 = vo^2*sin(2*45)/9.8

vo = sqrt(200*9.8)

= 44.27 m/s

b) chang in momentum = m*(vo - 0)

= 0.045*(44.27 - 0)

= 1.99 kg.m/s

c) we know, Impulse = chnage in momentum

Favg*t = change in momentum

==> Favg = change in momentum/t

= 1.99/(1*10^-3)

= 1990 N
