Question

Given a magnetometer (a sensitive compass), a helmholtz coil (which is a pair of coils), a variable power supply, a couple of multimeters, a stopwatch, and a small magnet.

The small bar magnet can be used to provide a small disturbance to the magnetometer needle to start it oscillating. The Helmholtz coil (and power supply) can be used to provide a magnetic (B) field. (Don’t forget the Earth’s magnetic field!)

In order to investigate the oscillations of the magnetometer needle in a magnetic field, what data could be taken during this experiment and what could be some phenomena we should be looking for during this investigation?

Explanation / Answer

We have to use the magnetic field. The magnetic field quantity has to change periodically, Check the deflection of the needle. By using the stop watch find the period of time required for the oscillation. This quantity will change periodically with respect with strength of the magnetic field. Number of coils is also directly propotional to the mgnetic field in the magnetic field. So it will also change the magnetic field.
