Assume that the three blocks in Figure P4.27 move on a frictionless surface and that a 42.0 N force acts as shown on the number 3 block. The masses of the three blocks are m1 = 1.2 kg, m2 = 2.9 kg and m3 = 4.2 kg Determine the acceleration given this system. Submit Answer Tries 0/7 Determine the tension in the cord connecting the number 3 and the number 1 blocks. Submit Answer Tries 0/7 Determine the force exerted by the number 1 block on the number 2 block. Submit Answer Tries 0/7

Explanation / Answer

a) a = F/(m1+m2+m3)

= 42/(1.2 + 2.9 + 4.2)

= 5.06 m/s^2

b) Tension in the cord, T = (m1+m2)*a

= (1.2+2.9)*5.06

= 20.75 N

c) Force exerted by number one block on the number 2 block = m2*a

= 2.9*5.06

= 14.674 N
