Question
There is a cart that weighs 10,000 lbs fully loaded on a railroad track. The cart has two axels and four train like wheels that ride on the rails with a diameter of 10 inches. At a max gradient of 5% what would be the braking force required to hold the cart still useing a simple block brake system. The rail and cart wheels are steel, the surface area of the brake block is 24 square inches and the coefficent of friction for the brake material can be sleceted appropriately.
I am looking for a setp be step solution for this problem with as much detail as possible. Please Help Thank You !!
I jut wanted to make an additional comment. I'm looking for the the force that would be applied directly to the brake shoe/block itself, not to a lever. Also, this brake would only be attached to one of the four wheels. Thanks
