Question
1. Your boss tells you to load a VERY heavy box onto a truck. You and three of your friends try to lift it, but it doesnt budge. Remembering from physics class how pulleys can help in this situation, you rig up the following system (shown on left). Assume the pulleys are massless and frictionless.
a. If the mass of the box is 1900 kg, what are the tensions T1 through T5 and force F needed to hold the box in place?
?b. What are the tensions T1 through T5 and force F needed to lift the box with an acceleration of 0.13 m/s2?

If the mass of the box is 1900 kg, what are the tensions T1 through T5 and force F needed to hold the box in place? ?b. What are the tensions T1 through T5 and force F needed to lift the box with an acceleration of 0.13 m/s2?Explanation / Answer
Here ,
as the pulley is massless and frictionless ,
the tensions , T2 , T3 , T4 , T5 are all equal
and
for mass m ,
2T - 1900 g = 0
T = 9310 N
and Here , F = T5
F = 9310 N
Hence , applied force ,
F = 9310 N
and T1 = 2T = 18620 N
T2 = T3 = T4 = T5 = 9310 N
B)
Now , for a = 0.13 m/s^2
For mass
T1 = m*(g+a)
T1 = 1900*(.13 + 9.81)
T1 = 18886 N
and F = T5 = T1/2
F = 9443 N
the applied force is 9443 N
and
T1 = 18886 N
T2 = T3 = T4 = T5 = 9443 N
