Question 1
a research device accelerates charged particles by injecting them betwen charged metal plates. one plate is at 0 volts and the other is at 100,000. Compare the kinetic energy gained by a proton (q=+e) to the kinetic energy gained by a alpha particle (q=+2e) after traveling from one plate to another.
KEproton= ___KEalpha
what coefficient goes there..why?
Question 2
a spherical conductor is placed in a region of space where the electric field points straight up. if the potential at the bottom of the conductor is measured to be 0V the potential at the top will be how many volts?
above 0 v
, belove 0 v
or equal to zero volts
Explanation / Answer
a) Let the distance between the plates be d.
So, electric field that exists b/w the plates = E = V/d
Force experienced by a particle = E * q
For, proton, F = E*e
Kinetic energy gained = Work done = F*d = E*e*d = Ve
For alpha particle, F = E * 2e
Kinetic energy gained = Work done = F*d = E*2e*d = 2Ve
Hence, KEproton = 0.5 * KEalpha
b) An electric dipole will be induced on the sphere in this case. The bottom of the sphere will become negatively charged while the top will become positively charged. But since it is a conductor (equipotential surface), the potential on the surface of the sphere will remain constant. So, potential at the top will also be equal to 0 V.
