Question

The roller coaster in the figure below starts with a velocity of 17 m/s. One of the riders is a small girl of mass 35 kg. Find her apparent weight when the roller coaster is at locations B and C. At these two locations, the track is circular, with the radii of curvature given in the figure. The heights at points A, B, and C are hA = 14 m, hB = 24 m, and hC = 0. Assume friction is negligible and ignore the kinetic energy of the wheels. (The figure is not necessarily drawn to scale.)

weight at B

Weight at C

Explanation / Answer

V at B = sqrt ( v^2/2 - g*h) = 6.81 m/sec .... accleration a B = V^2/r = 46.5/10 = 4.65 m/sec^2

so weight at B = m*(g+4.65) = 505.75 N

V at C = sqrt ( v^2/2 + g*h) = 16.07 m/s ..........accleration a C = V^2/r = 258.45/20 = 12.92 m/sec^2

so weight at C = m*(g+12.92) = 109.2 N
