Question

Four atoms are equidistantly placed in a line in an atom trap. The atoms all simultaneously scatter light from a laser beam whose frequency is well removed from resonance with any transition frequency of the atoms. Under such circumstances, the scattered light has the same frequency as the incident light. Determine the number and directions of the principal maxima, minima and subsidiary maxima of the interference pattern produced if the separation of the atoms is equal to the wavelength of the laser light. Determine also the relative intensities of the maxima, and hence draw a polar diagram of this pattern.

Interference
Theory - Diffraction
When monochromatic, coherent light falls upon a small
single slit it will produce a pattern of bright and dark fringes.
These fringes are due to light from one side of the slit
interacting (interfering) with light from the other side. The
positions of the minima (destructive interference
