Question

In the battle of ideas between naturalism and supernaturalism it is the sciences that have come out on top. In the public sphere it is the natural and social sciences that have credibility. At best, religious belief is a matter of private opinion. But if science has taken the place once occupied by religion, two problems remain. Religion persists despite the supposed victory of secular ideals. First, Christianity plays a vital part in the high-profile cultural wars being played out in U.S.politics. Second, most Christians are able to combine their faith with scientific knowledge, and in some cases, extensive expertise. These two difficulties require a different account of the conflict between secularism, and science in particular, and Christianity. I will argue that science has replaced religion as the effective technology in Western society. Science is functionally superior to religion and provides better explanations of the workings of nature and human life. But science has still not devised an adequate ethical system. Once this has been realized, science will have completely eclipsed religion in Western society.

Question: The author believes that religion and supernaturalism are largely the same, and opposed to naturalism and secularism in general, and science in particular. The author perceives Christians combining their faith with scientific knowledge as a problem, and in the author’s description of the argument to follow, the author suggests that this remaining problem arises because Christians have failed to realize that science is functionally superior to religion. Which of the following is not a problem with the author’s assumptions about religion?

c. Science and religion have always been intended to meet a finite, given set of society’s needs.

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER: c. Science and religion have always been intended to meet a finite, given set of society's need.

Author does not make this assumption in the above paragraph the other three options are assumptions of the author. Author keeps science and religion at two opposite ends and considers religion and supernaturalisn to be non functional for the society.
