Question

A block slides along a frictionless surface and onto a slab with a rough surface. The plot on the right shows the velocity of the blue slab as a function of time. The slab has mass of 4 kg and the block has mass of 2 kg.

    What is the friction force on the small block at t = 1 second?

Please show all work and explain. Need to learn this as simplified as possible.

Explanation / Answer

The slope of the graph provided will give the acceleration of the slab

At t = 1s

Slope = acceleration = (1-0)/(2-0) = 0.5 m/s2

Force = ma = 4 X 0.5 = 2 N

By Newton's third law

Force on bolck will be same = 2N
