Question

A billiard ball of mass m = 0.150 kg hits the cushion of a billiard table at an angle of 1 = 56.0° at a speed of v1 = 2.40 m/s. It bounces off at an angle of 2 = 55.0° and a speed of v2 = 2.10 m/s.

A) What is the magnitude of the change in momentum of the billiard ball?

B) In which direction does the change of momentum vector point? (Take the x-axis along the cushion and specify your answer in degrees.

Explanation / Answer

change in momentum = m ( final v - initial v)

= 0.150 ( 2.40sin56 i - 2.40cos56 j - ( 2.10sin55 i + 2.10cos55 j )

= 0.04 i - 2.55 j kg.m/s

A) magnitude = sqrt(0.04^2 + 2.55^2) =2.55 kg.m/s

b) direction = tan-1(0.04/ 2.55) =0.90 degrees below x-axis
