Question
We're doing a lab in alegbra physics studying collisions and friction.
A question asks: Is the main source of energy loss due to friction between collisions or due to energy loss in the collisons themselves?
Then: When the cart loses energy between collisions, where does the energy go? List at least two different energy terms where the energy goes and indicate what objects are involved with each energy term that you list.
-----
For the first question, I'm thinking most of the energy is lost in the collision itself
For the second question, I'm thinking the energy is converted to heat? And i'd use for my energy terms: 1/2 kx^2 and Fr*d?
Thanks!
Explanation / Answer
Major energy loss is due to collision itself.
The lost energy is converted into Heat, sound and permanent deformation of the colliding bodies.
