Question

?Suppose that in the same Atwood setup another string is attached to the bottom of m1 and a constant force f is applied, retarding the upward motion of m1. If m1 = 5.90 kg and m2 = 11.80 kg, what value of f will reduce the acceleration of the system by 50%?

?Suppose that in the same Atwood setup another string is attached to the bottom of m1 and a constant force f is applied, retarding the upward motion of m1. If m1 = 5.90 kg and m2 = 11.80 kg, what value of f will reduce the acceleration of the system by 50%?

Explanation / Answer

initail case

11.80 - T = 11.8*a

T -5.9*9.8 = 5.9*a

a = 3.266

when force applied on m1

11.8*9.8 - T = 11.8*a

T -f - 5.9*9.8 = 5.9*a

11.8*9.8 - 5.9*9.8 -f = (11.8+5.9)*a
but given a =3.266/2 = 1.633

we get f = 28.9159 N
