Question

For the system of capacitors shown in the figure the potential difference Vab is measured to be Vab = 24V.

(a) Determine the equivalent capacitance of the system.

(b) Determine the magnitude of the charge on capacitors C1 and C4.

(c) Determine the magnitude of the charge on capacitors C2 and C3.

(d) Find the potential difference Vx ? Vy.

Please show how you solved, thank you in advance! I know this question was previously answered on chegg, but i think it is wrong. If it is right, can you please explain how you get the answer(s) in more detail because im kinda lost. Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

a)

C2 and C3 are in parallel

C23 =4+2 =6 uF

C1 ,C23 and C4 are in series

1/Ceq=1/3 +1/6 +1/2

Ceq=1 uF

b)

Total Charge

Q=Ceq*Vab=1*24 =24 uC

In Series Charge C1 ,C4 and C_23 is same ,so

Charge on C1 is

Q1=24 uC

Charge on C4 is

Q4=24 uC

c)

as c2 and c3 are in parallel ,charge gets divided ,so

charge on C2 is

Q2=Q*(C2/C2+C3) =24*(4/4+2)

Q2=16 uC

Charge on C3 is

Q3=Q-Q2=24-16

Q3=8 uC

d)

Here it is asked for voltage across C3 is

Vx-VY=Q3/C3=8/2

Vx-Vy=4 Volts
