a) A rock is thrown straight down from the top of a bridge. The rock has just been released.
b) A car accelerates away from a stop sign.
c) A person descends in an elevator that moves at a constant velocity.
d) A person has just landed on a trampoline. She is stretching the trampoline, i.e. she is moving downward and slowing down.
e) A wet sock spins in a dryer.

Explanation / Answer

a. A force mg acting from the centre of the rock towards the earth, caused by the earth (if you consider air drag, it will act upward)

b. A torque acting on the car wheels which will accelerate them caused by burning of more fuel.The direction of angular acceleartion is taken towards the outside of the wheels. The force acting on the car is forward.

Also there is friction by the road on the wheels acting in the forward direction.

c.A weight mg caused by the earth acting downwards

A normal reaction N caused by the lift floor acting upwards

d. a weight mg acting on her downwards caused by the earth

A force acting upwards by the trampoline upwards
