Question

Question 1 of 8 sapling learning cy has three sources of sound that produce pure tones with wavelengths of 36 cm, 60 cm, and cm. ne also has an assortment of narrow tubes that are closed off at one end but open at the other. After experimenting, Lucy notices that each tone will resonate with tubes of some lengths, but not with others. For each wavelength, determine which tube length (s), if any, will resonate with sound of that wavelength 60 cm Wavelength of sound 36 cm 92 cm Length of tube 27 cm 45 cm 69 cm 15 cm 18 cm 9 cm A Previous ® Give Up & View Solution Check Answer Next Exit Hint

Explanation / Answer

for tubes to resonate the length of the tube should be [(2n+1)xwavelength/4] in this particular configurationso that standing waves are formed. If you are not sure what standing waves are, please read about them.

Hence for the 36 cm one length of the tube will be (2n +1)x9 where n is an integer. Hence the answer is 9 , 27 and 45 cm
Similarly

for 60 cm wavelength, length = (2n +1)x15; the answer is 15 and 45 cms.

for 92 cm wavelength, length = (2n +1)x23; the answer is 69 cm
