Question

5) Skid of 40 kg and Mitch of 60 kg are standing on ice. They are each carrying massless spheres of charge ,500 MuC while standing 2 m apart. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force on each sphere. Are the forces the same or different? Explain. (b) Calculate the magnitude of the accelerations for Skid and Mitch at the moment they are 2 m apart. Are they the same or different? Explain. (c) As Skid and Mitch move farther apart do their accelerations increase. decrease, or remain the same? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

a) both will exert same force in opposite direction (newton's 3rd law)
F = kq1q2 /d^2

= 9 x10^9 x 500x 10-6 x 500 x 10-6 / 2^2

= 562.5 N

b) a_skid = F/m = 562.5 / 40 = 14.06m/s2

a_mitch = F/m = 562.5 / 60 = 8.775 m/s2
mass is different so acc. will be different.

c) a = F /m = kq2q1 / md^2
as a is inversly propotional to d^2.
d increase, a decrease
