Question
The electromagnetic waves used in a microwave oven have a wavelength of 13.34 cm. (a) what is the frequency of this radiation? (b) Electromagnetic waves in a microwave can exhibit standing waves just as we discussed for other types of waves in Chapter 12 and 13. If there is a standing wave in your microwave oven, what is the distance between nodes? (c) Based on your answer in part (b), why do you think microwaves ovens contain rotating carousels? Suppose light with a wavelength of660 nm in a vacuum is incident upon fused quartz, which has an index of refraction of 1.36. What is the wavelength of this light be inside the quartz?Explanation / Answer
1. a) lambda f = c
f = 3.0E8/13.34E-2=2.25E9 Hz
b) node distance = lambda/2 = 13.34/2 = 6.67 cm
c) to make sure all poitns are getting heated and there arent cold spots (the nodes)
2)
lambda = lamba0/n = 660/1.36= 485.3 nm
