Question

Two circular loops of wire with small bulbs in them are sitting beside two long straight current-carrying wires. In both cases, these loops are the same distance away from the current-carrying wires. The wire loops, bulbs, and long straight wires are identical for the two situation but the current in the straight wires are different. A graph of current in each wire as a function of time is shown at the right below.

For each labeled time t1 - t5 state wether the brightess of bulb A is greater than, less than, or equal to the brightness of bulb B. If either bulb is not lit at all at that time, state that explicitly.

1) Time t1: 4) Time t4:
2) Time t2: 5) Time t5:
3) Time t3:

Please explain why or I wont count it as fully answered.

Explanation / Answer

1) t1

brigtness of B greater than A, since magnetic flux in B is changing faster

2) t2

A is lit, B is not lit since current is constant no change in flux

3) t3

Both will be lit with equal brightness, since rate of change of current with respect time is same,

4) t4

B brighter than A

since rate of change of FLUX BECAUSE of change in direction is higher in B

5)T5,

both will be not be lit, no change in flux

5) t5 = both
