1)

Two circular coils are concentric and lie in the same plane. The inner coil contains 120 turns of wire, has a radius of 0.012 m, and carries a current of 7.0 A. The outer coil contains 150 turns and has a radius of 0.017 m. What must be the magnitude and direction (relative to the current in the inner coil) of the current in the outer coil, such that the net magnetic field at the common center of the two coils is zero?

Magnitude_____________A

Direction______________

- no current in the outer coil

- same direction as the inner coil current

- perpendiculer to inner coil current

- opposite direction as the inner coil current

2)

The wire in the figure below carries a current of 10 A. Suppose that a second long, straight wire is placed right next to this wire. The current in the second wire is 31 A. Use Amp

Explanation / Answer

1) io = ii Ni Ro / Ri No

= 7.0 * 120 * 0.017 / 0.012 * 150

= 7.93 A

opposite direction as the inner current coil

---------------------------------------

2) magnetic field due to wire at adistance r is B = mu I / 2 pi r

current passing through first wire = 10 A

current passing through second wire = 31 A

Distance between point and wire is r = 0.72 m

current passing through wires is same I = I1 + I2 =   31 +10 = 41 A

magnetic field   B   = mu I / 2 pi r

= ( 4 pi * 10-7 ) ( 41 A ) / 2pi ( 0.72 m )

= 1.14 * 10-5 T

Current passing through two wire is in opposite direction

I = 31 - 10 = 21 A

B = mu I / 2 pi r

= ( 4 pi * 10-7 ) ( 21 A ) / 2pi ( 0.72 m )

= 5.83 * 10-6 T
