Question

21.50

In the figure, both switches S1 and S2 are initially open. S1 is then closed and left closed until a constant current is established. Then S2 is closed just as S1 is opened, taking the battery out of the circuit. Assume that R= 485.0? and L = 320.0mH .

Part A

What is the initial current in the resistor just after S2 is closed and S1 is opened?

I0 =_________ A

Part B

What is the time constant of the circuit?

? = _______ ms

Explanation / Answer

when constant current is established,

I = V / R = 250 / 485 = 0.515 A   .... This is the constant current value.

PartA :

Current through inductor can not be changed simaltanously.

So afting closing S2 and opening S1 ,

current will be same as before

i = 0.515 A

Part B :

Time constant   = L/R = 320 x 10^-3 / 485 = 0.660 x 10^-3   s or 0.660 ms
