Len Howard a 48-year-old male executive in a Fortune 500 Company. In a recent physical Exam, he was 5'11" tall and weighed 175. His serum cholesterol was 290 9 desirable: less than 200 mg/dl) with high-density lipoprotein of 50 (desirable 60 mg/dl and above) and LDL of 220 ( desirable: less than 100 mg/dl)
On the recommendation of his physician, he made an appointment with the dietitian in the corporate wellness program.MR. Howard's family history revealed that both his father and older brother died of heart disease. His wife is an attorney and they have a 15-year-old son.
Explanation / Answer
My counselling approach would be depending on the disease and the family background of the patient. Patients with critical illness need more metal support and people from less privileged families may need in depth counselling.
Barriers that are usually seen are related to medication, time and fear of counselling.
Identified barriers can be addressed by providing more education to the patient and making them understand that counselling help them for better living and fast recovery from illness.
