What conclusions can you draw about your unknown after the test with Bial's reagent? How does the color of your unknown in the Bial test support your conclusion. What conclusions can you make about your unknown after the test with iodine reagent? Summarize your conclusions. What is the identity of your unknown (aldose or ketose; pentose or hexose: monosaccharide, disaccharide or starch)?

Explanation / Answer

1= on reaction with seliwanoff's reagent unknown compound shows positive test I.e red colour is appeared. It indicates that presence of ketose because ketose more easily forms red colour due to dehydration . Aldoses slowly forms light pink colour .

2= Bail's reagent is for presence of Pentose .This test is used to distinguish Pentoses from hexoses .

Pentose on dehydration it forms furfural which is having the colour blue or green

Hexose form hydroxy methyl furfural it's colour is muddy brown or gray colour

3= Iodine test is for generally for identification of starch

When iodine solution reacts with starch it gives dark blue or purple. Intensity of colour decreases with increasing temperature

Finally seliwanoff's reagent is for ketose

Bail's reagent is for pentose

And iodine test for starch
