OVERUSE IN HEALTH CARE
overuse is defined as a health care service that is provided under circumstances in which its potential for harm exceeds the posssible benefit. it is provided with higher volume or cost than is appropriate. factors that drive overuse including paying healthcare providers more to do more, defensive medicine to protect against litigiousness, and insulation from price sensitivity in instances where the consumer is not the payer , health insurance systems.
over treatment is the unnecessary medical intervention including tretment , overdiagnosis. in the US , the country spends the most on the healthcare per person gobally. overuse is the most important contributor to the high cost. it lowers the quality of health care. when the care is iverused, patients are at risk of complications unnecessarily.
main cuses for overuses are physician's decisions, third party payers and free for service, medical malpractice laws and defensive medicine, direct to consumer advertising, physician's biases. To prevent over use there are some reduction efforts they are utilization management, patient protection and affordable care act, choosing choices wisely, public education campaigns,, re-envisioning payments and pricing, transparency of health care prices.
