Question

Select any area in your city, community, county, or region, and assume the patient in this week’s case study is in this area. Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research and answer the following: • Does your community have the required medical resources to handle the patient's problem? • How would the patient’s care be handled in your community? Identify the nearest hospital to the area you have chosen that treats the problem. Trace the patient’s course to this hospital. • List the healthcare professionals and facilities that would be encountered on the way. • Compare any two insurance plans and choose the one that would offer the most to the patient. • Discuss the essential quality-of-care issues involved in this case. What is the role of Telemedicine in your community and how do you access it? How does it affect the quality of care?

Explanation / Answer

In recent years the federal overnment has published data on almost all hospitals. Consumers see this published data and have an option to choose a hospital or not based on this data. Also relevant details regarding cost of treatment and type of treatment can be seen and patient can decide based on his / her financial status. Potential patients can also access details like experiences of previous patients and feedbacks along with number of deaths and readmissions for same condition. In this way patient will be more aware of success rates, quality care and cost of care while deciding hospital of choice for treatment. Using this important resource details regarding your community medical services.

While on the way to the hospital, the patient will encounter paramedical staff and finally wil be received by first line emergency nurses and ER doctors.

The 2 medical insurance plans available are both government owned. They are medicare and medicaid. Medicare provides insurance to post 65year olds with disability. Medicaid provides insurance to low income familes. Based on these a decision on which insurance policy is best suited to your patient.

Telemedicine is a tool for healthcare delivery especially in areas where higher health facilities and access to specialist doctors are limited. This role is critical and now a big resource in rural communities.
