Question
A study was performed involving 2 groups of athletes. Group A did not use pharmaceuticals to treat tissue injuries but instead followed the RICE protocol. Group B used ibuprophen before activities and after any tissue injuries or stress. In comparing the effects of the treatments each group used, what could you expect to observe? Reinjury would be more common in group A. Group A would experience prolonged healing times and poor healing outcomes. No observed difference in healing between the two groups. Group B would have faster healing of injured tissues with complete functional capacity. Group B would display prolonged healing time and poorer healing outcomes.
Explanation / Answer
Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) are generally accepted methods for treating inflammation after trauma such as ankle sprain. Inflammation causes pain, edema, erythema which can limit the patient’s ability to perform the rehabilitation needed for healing. Accumulation of fluid near the injury site increases tissue damage, delays healing and can lead to chronic disability.
RICE Therapy is the preferred treatment for the first few days. No difference was seen after 72 hours of RICE therapy in the outcome by using rest, immobilization of sprain, or by using ice, cold therapy, using compression, elevation for the treatment of sprains.
Group A would experience prolonged healing time and poor healing outcome.
