Kansas requires pharmacies to upload information about all controlled substance prescriptions to a centralized computer database that both prescribers and pharmacists can search. The intent of this program is to stop the diversion of controlled substances.

Kansas K Tracs system is one of the best things that can change the way use and abuse of controlled substances is monitored. It has proved beyond doubt that it can be used as an efficient tool to combat prescription drug abuse. Since its inception in Kansas, it has now been adopted in Oklahoma too. Also a lot of pharmacies are registering daily and this itself shows compliance of health workers towards the framework of Tracs system monitoring. Through its software the pharmacy will receive alerts on patients who are using different pharmacies for prescription drugs. This will alert them on the sale of presription drugs to these individuals and prevent drug abuse. Also the software has a good drug coding system. This will help errors in prescriptions of drugs using national drug codes to be rectified promptly. Also this ssystem facilitates good communication between patients and their doctors and pharmacies. However a few cons do exist: the software updation should be done in 24hours and seems time consuming. A few additional cost to company may be incurred. However the advantages are more brighter.

The law states that pharmacists should upload the details within 24 hours. However a warrant will be required by law enforcement agencies to access these details. To some extent patient doctor confidentiality will be compromised, however this is for the greater good and the attitude of careproviders and patients are now changing to incorporate this into the healthcare system. The government by default does not have a right to know what an individual is taking medication for, but if the patient is violating laws then the government has every right to intervene to protect the interests of its citizens. Hence warrants can be issued to access details from saoftware.
