Question

Appendix of Ch. 1 #1

1)      A-1. Explain which is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable for each of the following examples. (See page 19.

a.      Once you determine the price of a flash drive at the college bookstore, you will decide how many flash drives to buy.

b.      You will decide how many credit hours to register for this semester once the university tells you how many work-study hours you will be assigned.

c.       You anticipate earning a higher grade on your next economics exam because you studied more hours in the weeks preceding the exam.

Explanation / Answer

a. Here the independent variable is price of a flash drive because it will determine the total number of flashdrives to be bought. So the dependent variable is the number of flashdrives to be bought.

b. Here the independent variable is the number of work-study hours assigned because the number of credit hours to be registered for a particular semester would be based on it. So the dependent variable is the number of work-study hours.

c. As earning a higher or lower grade depends on studying more or less hours in the weeks preceding the exam, hence the independent variable is the number of hours studied and the dependent variable is earning a higher or lower grade.
