Discussion: Promoting Safety and Quality

In the article "Managing to Improve Quality: The Relationship Between Accreditation Standards, Safety Practices, and Patient Outcomes," the authors discuss the growing trend by medical insurance companies to eliminate reimbursement for Never Events. As these types of mistakes should be easily preventable, hospitals have developed protocols to lessen or extinguish the occurrence of these events. In addition, The Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have developed core measures to guide health care providers' efforts in improving patient safety and the quality of care delivered.

Health care organizations have developed strategic agendas to help meet these standards and reduce the incidence of Never Events. Nurses significantly influence the overall quality of health care provided and play a pivotal role in improving patient outcomes.

Consider the standards that are in place for nurses and how they can be used to improve quality of care.

Review the information at the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services websites on the core measures and standards presented in this week's Learning Resources.

Consider the nurse's role in supporting the organization's strategic agenda as it relates to improving clinical outcomes.

Conduct an Internet search for either a Never Event or a core measure, and select one to address in your post.

The Following challenges are influencing change in quality improvement:

1.Inadequate Staffing: Inadequate staffing is still a big issue in the healthcare field. Whether it is a hospital, nursing home or long term care facility, there are few nurses working on these areas. Due to Inadequate staff there is fall in promoting quality care for increased demand of health care.

This would mean that they need to undergo a continuing education and related certification in order to adhere the best practices and maintain quality nursing care services to patients. Although this is beneficial to everyone, taking a continuing education is overwhelming especially to those who are working full time. It can add a lot of stress to the nurses and affect their day to day work in a healthcare facility.so they can not contribute in promoting the change

They also need to stretch their time and effort because underperforming can affect the entire facility. Under these stress conditions the nurse is failed to participate in quality improvement programmes.

4. On-the-job hazards: Sharp containers, slippery floors, communicable diseases and patient lifting are just among the risks that can hamper staff member’s safety. Nurses are the primary caregivers to patients who are constantly at risk for contracting an illness. In fact, some of the uncontrollable hazards can lead to a permanent disability or injury, hence they are trained every now and then to alleviate the risks.

They have to adapt to these changes in order to keep an online database about their patient’s medical information. As a healthcare professional in this modern age, keeping abreast with the technology is essential.
