Explanation / Answer

Three common mistakes that health educators should avoid when writing SMART Goals and Objectives are:

1. The program goals often lacks specificity; narrow and lack clear purpose viz. To do(something)+(among whom)+(where); the goals are mentioned as a narrow statement or lack of specificity like To do something (C4H,2011).E.g.- To increase the knowledge of cardiac health in Brazil.

2. The process objectives are almost always mixed up with outcome objectives. A SMART objectives have to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable,Relevant, and Time bound. Most of the time Specific part is alright like what we are going to do, with, and for whom but Measurable part goes wrong. The objectives are set without estimating the controllables and uncontrollables. This affects the remaining ART parts. So who, what, where, and when are very important. Process objectives and outcome objectives can be categorized. E.g.- The 2 Senior health officials will impart training to a group of 12 nurses on handling "Pneumatic Tourniquet" which would comprise 2 sessions at UP hospital, Michigan (Process objective) whereas 90% of the nurses who attend the session will show their dexterity with the pertinent device(Outcome objective). A haphazard objective will be to train nurses on handling "Pneumatic Tourniquet".

3. Mission is not broken into goals and objectives resulting in obfuscation among the players within the organization. Often % change is misrepresented without properly defining the associated parameters and often the mission is misrepresented without specificity like nurses will have improved their machine handling ability.
