Question
Our book then tells us that “the interests of the individual man and woman are taking pre- cedence over the interests of the family. These personal goals are often centered around personal prestige, success, and the accumulation of material possessions” (Burger 41). People are so self-centered any more. This generation that is growing up think they should have everything handed to them like they are somehow entitled to it. What happened to working and getting your hands dirty? Our child who is 13 works for her cell phone (which is not a smart phone) and she is currently paying for her retainers again that she lost for the 2nd time. They have to learn self-responsibility. One of our biggest pet peeves is give participation trophies or “good job” certificates. No you didn’t win you shouldn’t get a trophy. We as a society are the ones to blame for this generation of self-centered, lack of values, lack of self responsibility generation. If we got back to what was really important FAMILY and hard work maybe we wouldn’t be so worried about what the Jones are doing this week or the safety on our streets. The Changing American Family
According to your text, “The family is no longer organized primarily around child rearing (Carter & McGoldrick, 1989).” The text goes on to say, “If it is true that child rearing no longer occupies center stage in family life, then what does? The new priorities have been identified by some writers as individualism – the belief that people should seek their own happiness, develop their capacities to the fullest, and fulfill their own needs and desires.
Explanation / Answer
The topic of the text is very important and very much related with the 21st century's speed life. The problem which is described in the text is not only appropriate for American family but also for whole human society. We can not avoid the importance of a family in growing a child to generate self responsibility, values in them. But modern life style does not have space and time for this. Most of them aims at self welfare and hapiness. The child in an American family becomes alone and suffering from many psychological discorders, which end in sometimes crimes in very early stage.
Individualism makes an individual only self centric. It sounds like selfishness. We are loosing bonding among family memebers and they can not care others. This is a result of modern life and tough job sechedule. The objective of earning lays on self interest. This is the reason we should aggree with the arguments which is described here.
