Question

Exercise for Critical Thinking Do from # 2 & 3 - bottom of pg. 94/top of pg. 95

Using one of the brainstorming methods described in this chapter, come up with three topics you might like to deal with your next classroom speech. For each topic, devise a specific purpose statement suitable for the speeh assignment. Make sure your specific purpose statements fit the guidelines discussed in the chapter. Here are several specific purpose statements for classroom speeches. Identify the problem (or problems) with each. To inform my audience how to sign up for face book. To persuade my audience that U.S. government should increase funding for stem cell research and support the development of hydrogen-fuel vehicles. What is an individual retirement account? To inform my audience why square grooves are superior to U-shaped grooves on golf clubs. To inform my audience about New Zealand. Donate blood. To persuade my audience that something has to be done about the problem of antibiotic- resistant bacteria. Below are three sets of main points for speeches. For each set, supply the general purpose, specific purpose, and central idea. General Purpose: Specific Purpose: Central Idea: Main Points: You should study abroad because it will enhance your personal development. You should study abroad because it will enhance your academic development. You should study abroad because it will enhance your career development.

b)

To analyse this sentence is also a specific purpose sentence with two seperate ideas. The statement should be, " To paursuade my audiance that the US govrnment should increase funding for stem sell reaserch", or, " To pursuade my audiance to support the development of hydrogen fuel vehicles".
