Question

Part 2: Understanding Why Discharge Varies with Time and Location With many stream gages recording stage heights at frequent time intervals it is possible to explore changes in discharge from time to time at a single location and from location to location at the same time. Then, we can interpret the causes of the changes in terms of natural processes or human activities. Figure 5 is a graph of average monthly discharge values for the Rio Grande at the Central Avenue stream gage and another gage at Otowi Bridge, near Los Alamos (see Figure 1 for the location of this stream gage). The average monthly discharge value is obtained by averaging all of the discharge estimates that are based on very frequent stage height measurements during a single month. 3000 1-0 Avg monthly dscharge, Oton 2500 Avg monthly discharge, Albuquerque 2000 1500 - 0 2000 2001 2002 Year 2003 2004 Figure 5. Comparison of average monthly discharge for the Otowi and Central Avenue (Albuquerque) stream gages, 2000-2003. 142

Explanation / Answer

9) During the may month of year 2001 the highest discharge occured at both the gages.

10) Discharge may be high due to the global rise in temperature in the particular year which was responsible for the melting of glacier deposites & ultimately increased the discharge.

11) I need the Annual glacier thickness change data so that I can calculate the annual contribution to gages & ultimately determine the correct reason for the increased dischrge in May, 2001.

12)May be Otowi gage is formed by the contribution of various tributaries which gets dry up duriog various months of the year except May & Albuquerque is a single sorce dependent gage whose fluctuations in discharge is governed by the supply from single glacier.
