Strahler Stream Classification System:
This classification is based on the hierarchical order of tributaries of a stream i.e. the tributaries are the main basis for the classification of rivers as first order, second order and third order. Second-order streams are formed as a result of combination of two first order streams whereas a third order stream is formed as a result of the coming together of two second order streams. This sequence continues like the branching of a tree. This is a top-down pattern. Rivers of the first order form the outermost tributaries.
Shreve Stream Classification System:
The outermost tributaries are assigned with the number 1. It is preferred over the Strahler Stream order in Hydrodynamics. It includes the parameters of discharge volumes and choice levels. It is the sum total of the number of sources in each catchment above a stream gauge or outflow.
Bifurcation Ratio is related to the branching patterns of the streams of Strahler Classification System. It indicates how close the branchings are. The ith bifurcation ratio for each order i of the hierarchy in the branch can be given as:
