the T-S Diagram below, do/answer the follow ing: (8 points) Salinity lparts per thousand North Allantic Water Masses W) Antanctc Intermediate Wate AABw) Antarcthic Bottom Water INADW) North Adiantic Deep Water NCSW) North Atartic C al Surface water | MMMediterranean intermedate water a) Suppose you collect a sample of 50 g of ocean water with a temperature of 5°C. Whern you evaporate the liquid water, the mass of salt left behind equals 1.77 g. Using this information and the diagram above, what was the density of this water? (4 points) b) Which of the following deep water masses above is the most dense? (2 points) c) Which of the following deep water masses above is the least dense? (2 points)

Explanation / Answer

b)Antartic Bottom water (AABW)

c) North Atlantic central surface water (NACSW)

Explanation: The density of seawater is a function of temperature, pressure and salinity and is a fundamental oceanographic property. Density characteristics of a parcel of seawater are determined when it is at the sea surface. AABW is the bottom water with low temperature and intermediate salinity among all the others, hence is the denser one. This is why we call it bottom water. As the water got dense, it sinks. However,NACSW is the surface water and have high temperature among all the other, hence it's have less density among all the others.
