21. Clay sized sediment is formed mostly by the: a) grinding of sediments at base of a glacier b) chemical weathering of feldspars c) evaporation of salty water in deserts d) has always existed 22. Limestone is commonly formed by organisms in: a) shallow warm clear ocean water b) deep cold clear ocean water c) shallow warm muddy ocean water d) ice covered lake water e) all of these 23. When a stream flows into a lake, where is course sand is deposited? a) 50-100 yards out from the shore c)right where the stream enters lake b) out in the center of the lake d) across the lake by the outlet stream 24. Glacial sediments are composed of: a) clay and silt size c) boulder and gravel size b) sand size d) all of these e) none of these

Explanation / Answer

21. The clay sized sediments are formed by the chemical weathering of the feldspars. Clay contains many trace minerals and when the feldspar is chemically weathered. Upon chemical weathering the feldspar gets converted into illite and kaolinite which are clay minerals. Feldspar is not as strong as quartz and weathers chemically and releases sodium calcium and other ions resulting in the formation of these different clays.

22. Limestone itself is a chemical composition of carbon. THere are several processes involved in the formation of limestone. But the organisms are dead and buried in the deeper layers of the earth. Limestone formation needs ideal conditions like pressure and temperature. So, limestone form the organisms can be found in shallow warm and oceanic water.

23. A stream carries lot of sediments with it and when it reaches the lake, the heavy coarser grains finds a larger space. So when this happens the coarser sediments first gets deposited right where the stream enters the lake and some fine sand gets deposited little far from the mouth of the lake

24. Glacial sediments are composed of many sized sediments. Because these sediments are frozen in many states. Some are in boulder size and some are into fine size and there will be no action on them for years. So these grains are not disturbed and thus we can see all sizes of sediments in glacial sediments
