A) What might have caused the uplift of the Appalachian Mountains? Where in GA do the Appalachians occur?

B) What geologic regions in Georgia are part of the Appalachian system? What geologic region is Atlanta within?

C) What rock types are found in the various regions of the Georgia Appalachians? Where might the Paleozoic sedimentary rocks have come from (hint: think about the environment of Georgia from Question 1 and the rocks that formed there)? Which rocks show the least evidence of alteration, and which show the most?

D) Do you think the altered rocks were originally similar or different than the unaltered ones (hint: think about what the Devonian rocks of Georgia can alter into)? Considering their original rock type, and the amount of alteration, what specific kinds of metamorphic rocks might you expect to see in the Blue Ridge?

E) The Valley and Ridge region, appropriately enough, is dominated by alternating ridges and valleys of folded Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. What process/event might have created those folds? Give an approximate estimate for what the strike of those folds would be.

Explanation / Answer

A) The cause of the uplift of the Appalachian Mountains is the plate collisions during the formation of the supercontinent Pangea. We can see that the Atlas Mountains are similar to Appalachian mountains when they experienced the continental drift. The Appalachain mountains occur in North East Georgia and towards west.

B) The Valley and Ridge, Blue ridge mountains and the Piedmont in Georgia is a part of the Appalachian system.

C) The major rock types in the Georgian Appalachian are Igneous rocks, high grade metamorphic rocks and thrusted paleozoic sediments. The sediments were deposited when the North American continent was flooded by the Lapetus ocean during the paleozoic era. The softer sediments are eroded whereas the harder sedimentary rocks are found today in form of valleys and ridges. Snadstone and chert show least evidence of alteration whereas Limestone and shale shows the most alteration.

D) The altered rocks are different from the unaltered rocks. In the Blue ridge mountains, the major rock type is the Granitic Charnockites and sedimentary limestones.

E) In the Valley and Ridge region, the sediments are folded due to the continental collision in late paleozoic era. The general stike of these folds are Westwards.
