Question

We have covered several different energy sources for producing electricity. Which one do you most support for expansion in the U.S. over the next ten to twenty years? Please explain your reasoning. Describe an environmental concern you would have about expanding exploitation of that energy source. What mix of energy sources for electricity do you suggest as a goal? What do you think is the biggest hurdle you foresee in achieving your goal? Reminder: the 2015 mix for electricity was Coal 33.2%, Natural Gas 33.0%, Nuclear 19.5%, Hydro 6.0% (net), wind 4.7%, Biomass 1.6%, Solar ~1% (utility & distributed), Petroleum 0.7%, geothermal 0.4%.

Explanation / Answer

U.S is capable to generate electricity from any source like solar energy; hydroelectric energy etc. But I am in favor of hydro energy because near U.S there occur too many current which can be utilized to generate electricity. Although the share of hydro energy in energy mix of U.S is low but it can have a bright future for hydro energy in U.S.

The biggest hurdle to achieve this goal is technical assurance. US should develop cost effective and sustainable technology to generate electricity from hydro sources.
