Subject matter jurisdiction is the authority of any court/judiciary to hear the cases specific to a particular subject. Few courts are given the power to hear the cases relating to a few particular subjects. The objective is to come up with better decisions as the courts are supposed to be supplied with resources which are expert in that field only.

To take an example, the cases relating to bankruptcy are heard by the bankruptcy courts only. Bankruptcy courts are supposed to have better knowledge and decision-making ability in terms of these cases. Note that Subject matter jurisdiction is different from the personal jurisdiction. Judiciary is usually divided into different subject matter expert areas e.g. Civil, Criminal, Family Law, Defense etc. Any courts which come under each one of those courts are usually the subject matter expert courts.
