Question

4. Variable schedules of reinforcement produce responses that are most resistance to extinction. Explain why and provide an example to support your answer. In the case of Lorelei, how could you utilize a variable schedule of reinforcement to encourage positive changes in her target behaviors? 5. Looking back on what we learned in our last unit (module #3), let's explore how the theories of child development play into this situation. Considering what we know about temperament, what type of temperament do you think Lorelei demonstrates? Provide examples to support your answer. How might Lorelei's temperament play a part in her behaviors at home and at school?

Explanation / Answer

In operant conditioning, variable schedule responses produces a result which is most resistant to extinction. Before understanding the behavioural characteristics that makes variable resistance most effective and less prone to extinction, it is crucial to understand its basic three characteristics. Variable schedule responses are rate of responses which encounters rewards after an unpredicable number of responses. This creates a steady high rate of responses due to uncertainty in the appearance of the rewards. Due to its nature of appearance of rewards at uncertain interval of time, it strengthen the rate of responses. For example, the professional gamblers in Las Vegas are heavily motivated by the operand conditioning principles. They keep up on the act of gambling , anticipating to win a heavy amount (reward). The expectation of a reward urges them to continue their gambling behaviour. This expectation is a result of the behavipur being rewarded in the past. Nonetheless, extinction of the learned rewaded behaviour does cease when the reinforcements are stopped. Still, variable-ration reinforcement schedule are most resistant to exitnction due to its unpredictability of appearance of rewards after variable interval of time.

5. For the second part of the answer, please share the case study of Lorelei. This would help me understand the temperament and developmental milestone in the her case. The information will be used to provide a theoretically rich answer. Thank you.
