Question
Several factors play a role in the success of a business that are beyond the scope of financial statements alone. Organizational culture, management philosophy and ethics each have an impact on how well a business performs in the long term. No matter the size or industry business ethics are one of the most important aspects of long-term success, so for this assignment, you have been provided with TWO ethical dilemmas. Please select ONE of the dilemmas below and discuss. Is it ethical? Illegal? How should this situation be handled, in your opinion.
Personnel Dilemma
Your company has a firm policy regarding cases of theft of company property. Used company equipment is on a table to be sold by bid each month. You see a valued employee who is 2 months from retirement slip an electric drill from the table and put it in his car before the day of the sale. What so you do?
Teacher Dilemma
You have a student who is from a single parent family. The student must work to attend college. However, the job is interfering with the student’s performance and several assignments have not been turned in. You have determined that a “D” is all the student can make when a counselor informs you that the student need a “C” to qualify for an academic scholarship.’ What do you do?
Explanation / Answer
The first dillema has been choosen-
Here the employee who has stolen a drill from office and has committed not only an ethical violation but also an illegal activity could be handled in either of the three ways -
1) Either to remove him from his employment/ giving some penalty and suspension for some time.
2) Or Warn him about his action, take that drill to keep it again at the table and let him go
3) Or Avoid the whole incident.
Amongs the above three the last one is the one that should not be adopted as it does not serve the interest of the company or of the employee and from moral point of view is totally wrong. It would be like participating in the voilation when ignoring it.
The last second could be an option but is weak. This would only make the employee understand that he can get away with a warning and it wont contribute in enhacing the ethical environment of the firm.
The first option that is to either remove the employee or suspend it for some time is the best from every point of view. At first it would serve as an example for other employees and would make the ethical environemnet strong, it would make the employee also understand that such deceit is not acceptable at the workplace. This action could conrribute to the development of intolrenace towards wrong at workplace in the organinzation.
