1. Before you answer this question, do an internet search on "Mineral Processing Flowcharts'". Now assume you have a bucket full of mixture of water with fine clay, vegetable oil and sand size particles of quartz, magnetite, gold and halite. Knowing the physical properties of these minerals, draw a flowchart or describe a process on how are you going to efficiently separate each of the "mineral" components. The equipment you are going to use are beakers, sieves or screen, magnet hydrochloric acid, spoon, filter papers, stirrer and hot plateExplanation / Answer
Mixture of water with fine clay, vegetable oil and sand size particles of quartz, magnetite, gold and halite are taken in beakers. Vegetable oil being thick and sort of sticky and oily it sticks to the filter paper. So, vegetable oil is seperated physically by spoon. Then the mixture of water with fine clay, sand size particles of quartz, magnetite, gold and halite is mixed by spoon. Sand size particles of quartz, magnetite, clay and gold are seperated from water and dissolved halite by using filter paper. Magnet is used for seperating magnetite due to its magnetic in nature from quartz, clay and gold. Water and dissolved halite is seperated by stirrer and hot plate by evaporation method and halite crystals left to the beaker. Sieves or screen seperates the clay particles from sand size gold and quartz grains Quartz and gold has been seperated by hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid disolve the quartz grains and seperating gold from quartz.
