It should be evident that all this is based on data collected and examined by researchers But how are these data used to investigate and measure how Plate Tectonics actually unfolds on Earth, how continents moves, or mountains are built? It turns out that to do that you need to describe the motion of plates in mathematical terms. This can be quite complicated, because plates move on a spherical earth, and the mathematical and geometrical knowledge required to do the calculations can be challenging. However it is possible to represent Earth's surface on a plane instead of a sphere, and to represent the plates as flat surfaces, with the boundaries presented as straight lines. This greatly simplifies the calculations. We will use this approach here to investigate plate motion and plate interaction.
