Question
Entrepreneurship is a key component of economic development. In order to promote this entrepreneurial capacity in rural areas, there must be active citizen participation to successfully implement the economic development process. Trust between the citizens and those elected to lead them is one of the key factors in this implementation. The article compares two similar rural counties in Texas, one with political distrust and the one without any trust issues. In the beginning development stages, both counties seem to be on the right track, but that initial distrust of one eventually lead to an unsuccessful implementation of the program. But as the article indicated, trust is not enough to complete the process and that the need for citizen participation will contribute to the success of the program. Unfortunately, if the initial trust is absent then there will be a direct impact on citizens willing to participate in the latter stages of the program.
Conclusion
I agree with the overall consensus of this article. The simple idea that community participation is dependent upon initial trust. As I read in the article, the city of Roy had distrust in their elected officials from the very beginning. It’s hard to be active in projects that you don’t believe will benefit you or your community in the end. I would like to have heard some feedback from the community of Roy on how the process could have been improved. Maybe there was something the economic development team could have done to reassure the community that they could trust the process.
Questions to consider
Do you believe that any other outside factors may have played a part of the implementation failure compared to Green Tree?
How would you have intervened in the county of Roy to help bridge the gap of distrust between the officials and the citizens?
Explanation / Answer
For a business to be successful, there must be a good trust and feelings of togetherness developed between the partners of the business. In the above situation mentioned let us name to two countries as:
- A: one with political distrust
-B: wit no such problem
In the beginning, both the countries are working well but after a few initial stages, they start facing problems of mismanagement and lack of participation. These problems can be seen as :
1. the external factors that affect the success of any business is the participation, without the participation of the citizens country A started to face problems and obstructions in its success field.
2. These problems are, due to political distrust the citizens refuse to adopt the policies framed or obstruct the implementation of the programs that are required by the govt.
3. Lack of cooperation among the country members for the development of a country is a major problem. Looking at the above situation from an entrepreneurial view, lack of cooperation means poor efficiency and effectiveness int he works to be performed. Every employee would be working for self-interests and hence coordination would lead to poor results.
For bridging the gap between the officials and the citizens I would have:
-spoken to both the sides on the first step.
- after listening to both, individually would have tried to make them realize the importance of the cooperation and coordination demanded by the work to be done.
- would have enumerated the benefits that the citizens themselves would get if the aim of the business or the target is achieved.
- without their cooperation and trust, the Government is nothing, would have tried to make them realize.
- on the govt,'s side, I would have made them as well realize the importance of the hands of their citizens and the power of togetherness that they are missing.
- they must try to make the citizen's demands fulfill to the full extent they can, and them together for achieving their same goals.
