Question
The majority of older Americans in need of health assistance are cared for by family members. Many of those in caregiving roles are also caring for their own families (the so-called
"sandwich generation" of American adults who are caring for older parents and possibly for their own children, simultaneously)....and many of us in caregiving roles are also working in some capacity (full time, part time, outside of the home, etc.)
1. What implications does this have for employers?
2. What type of employer policies might support an employee in a caregiving role?
3. On a larger scale, would you support government assistance for "informal" (i.e. family, non-skilled) caregivers, such as tax reduction incentives or even a subsidy for respite care? Why, or why not?
Explanation / Answer
1)
Most of care giving people are aged between 35 to 60 and majority of them are employed. 75 % of caregivers are women. these women have to balance between household work and official work. It might even impact the performance of employees in office since they have to pay considerable attention at home as well.
efficiency and work of employees may be affected by this. thus, in many cases employers may not prefer to hire such workers who are obliged to provide care to elders and old people.
2)
Giving care is noble act but excessive act of care may result into stress. Thus, following policies can support employees:
3)
Over the 44 Million people of US provide cares to old or other dependent people. it is estimated that over 44 billion hours are spent in this informal market which are amount to $ 385 Billion.
Since these people provide great and most needed helps to needy people. Such act of care giving reduces burden of government to take care of old and destitute. Thus, government must offer some sort of help to them people in form of tax and subsidies. Even nominal salary can be offered to such people.
