Question

14) You are part of a team that is restoring a degraded stream bed in a 5.2 mi catchment. The land use is similar to much of Baltimore City and densely populated parts of Baltimore County: apartments and row homes (or multiple attached units). In order to effectively design rhe restoration, your team needs to know the maximum discharge that is likely during summer thunderstorm events or hurricane events. The climate/metcorology person on your team determined an average rainfall intensity of 0.75 in/hr is the maximum that might be expected for a 20-year storm. Determine the maximum discharge for this stream, reporting the results in cubic feet per second. (8 pts)

Explanation / Answer

For Calculating the Discharge of stream are done by using rational equation method. In that we need three factors.

q=ciA where q=peak discharge, c=runoff coefficient, i=rainfall intensity, A= drainage area in acres.

we having rainfall intensity=0.75 inch/hr and area= 5.2 square miles convereted to acres is 3328 acres, runoff coefficient of rational method is based on soil type and drainage basin slope and also constant value for each landuse pattern is given in rational method. In our area landuse will be builtp area or residential area and the runoff coefficient of rational method ranges from 0.3 to 0.75 but ours are densely populated then we took the maximum value of runoff coefficient as 0.75 then the Peak discharge will be

Q =0.75*0.75*3325 =1872 cubic feet/sec
