Question
Legalization of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin often provokes intense disagreement among citizens as well as policymakers. Because legalization would create a market for these drugs, economists can provide helpful commentary based on consumer choice and demand. Could you please let me know what you do think about legalizing drugs, with pros and cons and explained in detail. I am not from the US, so I would like to have some insights about how you guys feel about this topic. Also, how would this affect the market and what possibilities does the market have if it would be legalized? That would be very interesting.
Explanation / Answer
After generations of struggle and long wars finally some nations are able to organize as successful socities with reasonable governments. There are many big problem these nations face, but healthcare and security are among the biggest responsibilities of any government
1) Healthcare: The immediate effects of legalization of harmful substances on healthcare would be notorious, Alcohol and tobbaco continues to take millions of lives every year. The costs of treating the patients related to tobbaco and alcohol all over the world easily runs to trillions of dollars,
2) Security: The immediate effects of legalization of hard drugs like heroin or cocaine can be too dangerous, The demand for such drugs would be very high and psychotic effects such drugs cause can easily take lives of innocent civilians.
Clearly these two things will be on the mind of every government
But, legalization of marijuana clearly would be the step in right direction, some even argue it as a replacement of tobacco which has serious cancer risks. But, this will result in loss of government revenue.
Tobbaco is contributing billions of dollars in taxes, there would be resistance from government and industry to introduce any serious tobbaco alternative. So cleraly such legalization would be fought with billions of dollars worth of lobbying.
So i support legalization of unharmful drugs and even banning tobbaco all together or in phased manner, The costs of treating tobbaco related illness might be even higher than tax revenues it could offer.... Calculating the value of human life itself is not possible for rational economists.
Thank you...
