Question
Astronomy Lab 3 Formation of the solar system/the terrestrial planets 1. a. What are the four major categories of matter making up the solar b. Compare the compositions, sizes and locations of the terrestrials and system? Jovians 2. a. why did the terrestrials not end up with thick atmospheres of H and He? b. why is Pluto not particularly rich in H and He like its neighbors Uranus and Neptune? 3. if the solar nebula had been too warm for ices to condense anywhere, what would a planet at the distance of Jupiter be like? 4. a. what should the surface temperature of Mars be, given its orbital radius of 1.5 AU b. Venus is 0.75 AU from the sun. What should its temperature be, considering only distance? c. what is the actual measured temperature of Venus? 5. a. what is albedo? b, the albedo of the moon is 0.07, what % of the sunlight striking the surface of the moon actually absorbed? c. which of these bodies should be warmer, Earth or moon? 6. Considering only distance from the sun and albedo, what are the predicted temperatures for Venus Earth Mars 7. An additional factor that determines the actual temperature of a p atmosphere. lanet is the composition of its a. What is the current average temperature of Earth? b. what happens to the temperature of Earth when you double the CO2 c. what happens to the temperature of Earth when you double the wat 8. If the atmosphere of Venus had the same co2 and water vapor conten temperature be?Explanation / Answer
1.Solar system are making up of matter called solid, liquid, gas and plasma.Terrestrial are small in size mercury, venus, earth are terrestrial and jovians are big in size and they are jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune.Terrestrial made up of solid surface and jovians are gaseous surface.terrestrial are close to sun and spin slowly but jovians are viceversa.
2. Terrestrial planets are not thick atmosphere of H and He because they both are light element tend to evaporate into space over time but for jupiter like planets having enough gravity to hold them.
gravity of the pluto is very less when compared to uranus and neptune and this causes the H and He are less.
3.Planets will look like reddish colour of brightness
4. mars surface temperature is around -55 degree celsius in polar and 20 degree cesius in the equator.
venus temperature 462 celsius.
5.albedo is a fraction of solar enrgy reflected back to space from earth. 7 percent moon energy is reflected when albedo is 0.07. earth is warmer than moon.
6. Temperature of each planet is calculated by Tp=Ts(1-a)1/4 square root(R sun/2D)
7.The average temperature of earth is 61 degree celsius. whne doubling the Co2 content then earth will be more warmer and ice caps are start melting. temperature will be doubled. Water vapour also similiar to CO2 having the capability to trap heat and green house gas in earth will be increased.
8.Venus is mostly composed of Co2 if it will be same as of earth then the temperature of venus will be decreased
