Question

The Principle of lateral continuity refers to the fact that sedimentary beds originate as continuous layers that extend in all directions until they eventually grade This image shows West Cedar Mountain in southern Utah. The gray rocks are shale that originated as muddy river delta deposits. The sediments composing the orange sandstone were deposited by a river. Place the events related to the geologic history of this area in proper sequence. Explain your logic. Include the following: uplift, sandstone, erosion, and shale. What term is applied to the type of dates you established for this site?

Explanation / Answer

Question 1:

The events in chronological order from older to younger are erosion - uplift - sandstone - shale - erosion.

Logic: Erosion and weathering of the parent rocks had formed sediments and transported them to their place of deposition. The place of deposition acted as the site of uplift of the sediments which had undergone compaction and diagenesis before uplift and after deposition. Sandstone and shle were formed subsequently. Shale consists of finer grained-sediments than sandstone and so, has formed afbove the sandstone.

Question 2:

The term applied for this type of dating is Lithostratigraphy.
