Question
Activity 1.3 Plotting a Point on a Map Using UTM Coordinates Date: Course/Section: Name: A1.3.1. We are going to plot the location of the active vent of the Old Faithful geyser. As of mid-August 2015, the active vent was located approximately at UTM coordinates 12T 513671 mE 4923032 mN. 614 $13 4924 4924000mN Geyse Upper Spasmodic Geyser Geyser BasinGeyser Hill Lion Group-Anemone Geyse ring ol Old Faithful 4923000mlN Faithfu 4923 Geyser Blup 513000mE 514000mB Figure A1.3.1 I. Regarding a first look at the map in Fig. A1.3.1 (a) What is the minimum easting on the map minimum easting (top, bottom, left, right)? (b) What is the minimum northing on the map? mE. What edge of the map is bounded by the mN. What edge of the map is bounded by the minimunn northing (top, bottom, left, right)? central meridian for this zone to the east (right) or west (left) of this map area? (Refer to Fig. 1.5 for assistance.) 2. The yellow square that surrounds most of the map in Fig. A1.3.1 represents a horizontal area on the ground that is 1 km by I km in dimension, so we can use a side of that square as a bar scale. (a) As accurately as you can, measure the length of a side of this square in cm; we'll use the variable name a5 for this length. a5- cm (b) We will use the variable name b5 for the number of cm in I km. 65- e) The fractional scale of this map can be found by dividing b5 by as-we'll call that result es. The fractional scale is or l' . That means that l length unit of any sort (cm, for example) on the map represents e5 length units of the same sort (cm) on the ground. 24Explanation / Answer
1) a) The minimum easting of the map is 513000mE. The left edge of the map is bounded by minimum easting.
b) The minimum northing of the map is 4923000mN. The bottom edge of the map is bounded by the minimum northing.
c) A central meridian is reference line of a map, which runs through the centre of the map, N to S, used as the reference line for drawing other meridians. The central meridian or reference projection meridian is on the west or left side of the map. Because here we have 514000mE on the east side of the map and 513000mE on the west side of the map. So, the value is lowering on the west side of the map. So, central meridian will be on the west side of the map.
